A place is an obelisk, reaching to the sky; down again to a point in the ground. Not a solid point, but a hesitant, mysterious one (some say always shifting). Ripples of life arch out from its base in unexpected ways. The obelisk series is an informal collecting of time and place haphazardly documented by two perambulating filmmakers.

Two college friends, now in their thirties, admire each others' lives and feel trapped in their own. Wes, tied to a demanding career and responsibilities to family, extends a work trip to drag his dispirited artist friend Luke to find Luke's "one that got away."

During the German occupation, Belarusian teacher Ales Moroz does not abandon his students, instilling in them a sense of determination and courage. One day, the students disobey their teacher and decide to avenge their parents. As a result of a failed attempt on the lives of Nazi henchmen, the children are taken prisoner. Unable to find support from the partisans, Ales decides to share the fate of his students and surrenders to the enemy, which after the war is considered treason. Only one of his students, Pavel Miklashevich, miraculously survives until Victory Day. Continuing his teacher's work, Pavel devotes his life to restoring the good name of Ales Moroz.

The basic story of a young criminal not quite living up to his won ideals of "not to give a damn" sidesteps out of his criminal career while dragging his younger brother into it, could have been interesting. Unfortunately the implementation is simply not good enough. As so often with Danish movies, there is little appreciation for detail thus leaving us with hoodlums talking like they've done time at a business academy rather than a prison. Dialects completely out of here and idiosyncratic bikers without bikes or even character for that matter. An ever accelerating surrealism towards the end doesn't help to clear the slow pace of this film but it does give a glimpse of what the story could have unfolded to become.

Jesse Corwood is a 31-year-old man living with his mother in Portland, New York. Obsessed with music and driven by a desire to create, but lacking a thriving local scene, Jesse records numerous songs by himself, invents 17 fictional bands, and meticulously documents their imaginary stories in his notebooks. Jesse's plan works when Rolling Stone takes interest in his label, Portland Records, but he struggles to maintain the illusion when the magazine requests photos and interviews with the bands.
